Story Behind The Little Fishes Blanket

Sometimes inspiration appears when you least expect it.

The idea for the Little Fishes Blanket actually started when I spotted a jumper in an Instagram advert (as much as I hate those I was grateful this time). The ad had a kids jumper with fish swimming across the front and I remember thinking how lovely that simple motif would look worked into a crochet blanket. The idea started taking shape and before long I was sketching it out.

The result is the Little Fishes Blanket which features four rows of fish swimming from left to right across the blanket.

One of my favourite things about this design is the texture. The stitches create a gorgeous fish-scale effect across each fish, giving them a lovely depth that you don't quite appreciate until you see the blanket in person. 

I made my sample using Yarnsmiths Create DK in Denim Blue and Parchment, a colour combination that felt perfect for the design. The soft blue gives the blanket a calm, coastal feel while the lighter contrast colour helps the fish stand out clearly although I also think this would look amazing in a multitude or colour ways. 

As someone who is still fairly new to designing crochet patterns, this project definitely pushed me outside my comfort zone. There were plenty of moments spent tweaking charts, adjusting shapes and figuring out the best way to make the fish look just right. It challenged me in so many ways but that's exactly what made it so rewarding and has definitely given me more confidence in my design skills.

I think this blanket would make a wonderful gift for a new baby or expectant parents. It's playful without being overly cutesy, and the simple fish motif gives it a timeless feel that works in a wide range of nursery styles. Whether it's used for cuddles, tummy time or simply draped over a nursery chair, I hope it becomes one of those handmade pieces that is treasured for years to come.
